I think that a GIF cannot really be considered a story. I say this because a story is defined as “an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment.” A GIF does not hold enough content to carry out events in a way a story can. Putting a sentence to a GIF does not really give it much of a story either, it just adds an explanation to something, like the example below.

This week was super challenging I felt, I wanted to rip my hair out at times but honestly thank god for the movies we had to watch because that gave me an excuse to sit back on the couch, kick my feet up, and have a beer. I had to study for a lot of exams and be really prepared for that. This week I think I realized, however, how much time Professor Burtis puts into this class making all of our videos and preparing thing assignments we do. I appreciate that and wanted to give credit where credit is due. Her preparations have taught me all ready so much!!

  1. I go back and forth on the GIF question. Sometimes I think that GIFs (and other forms of new media) may be forcing us to rethink what a story even is. . .but I definitely take your point that they’re (generally) so brief it’s hard for them to contain much meaning.
